MISSING AUNTY JEMIMA examines the resale of Aunt Jemima memorabilia by white sellers on Facebook Marketplace, highlighting the erasure and commodification of Black imagery. Using missing person ad aesthetics and Pearl Milling Company pancake mix as wheat paste, I call attention to what’s really missing—the acknowledgment of how Aunt Jemima’s image was built on the exploitation of Black women. A QR code linking to The Mammy Caricature article from the Jim Crow Museum adds historical context, challenging viewers to reconsider these objects not as collectibles, but as artifacts of racial stereotyping. This work asks us to sit with the discomfort, question who profits from these histories, and rethink what we choose to preserve.
